The 2001 Gathering of Friends

Robert Horvay
Mickleton MM

The 2001 Friends General Conference Gathering will be at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, which is about 400 miles from the Salem Quarter area. The Gathering will commence on 30 June and end on 7 July. Monthly Meetings should consider budgeting matching funds for first time attenders to the Gathering.

Friends General Conference is again offering matching funds to first-time attenders. Friends needing financial help to attend the Gathering should first request help from their monthly, quarterly, and yearly meetings. FGC will then match those funds within its guidelines, but travel grants will not be matched. Once you have a commitment from your meetings, attach a letter to your registration form indicating what you expect to receive from other sources and your additional needs. All scholarship requests of FGC must be postmarked by 11 May.

Once again, Friends planning to attend the Gathering for the first time should ask for matching funds. FGC has the funds to enable you to attend. If your meeting does not have the ability to provide matching funds, and you’re interested in attending for the first time, please phone me (856-223-5111) before deciding you can’t afford to attend.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Friends who are 18 to 40 years old may also be eligible for support from Friends Institute. FGC work grants (discussed in the Advance Program) are also available for Friends who have previously attended the Gathering in recent years.

For adults, plenary programs will be presented by Friend Steve Curwood, host of NPR’s Living on Earth; Friend Ann Riggs, a Quaker theologian & ecumenist; Friend Stan Becker, a professor of population studies; and Friend Joe Volk, executive secretary of Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL). Performing at the Gathering for adults and children will be Robin & Linda Williams (playing a variety of American music) and Joyce Johnson Rouse in Earth Mama. There is also a Young Adults program for Friends ages 18- 35.

High School Friends should apply as soon as possible, because of the popularity of the program. This year there’s an established limit of 150 high school participants (no exceptions!). For high schoolers, it’s a great way to learn what dorm living is like and to live on a university campus, as well as being with high school F/friends from coast to coast.

The Junior Gathering is for children from infants through junior high. Infants, toddlers and preschoolers will be placed in groups by age. Children entering in the fall kindergarten thru 7th grade will be grouped by their fall grades, e.g. all children who will be 3rd graders in the fall will be grouped together. Children entering 8th or 9th grades will be grouped together in the Junior High program.

Watch for your Advance Program, which will be mailed to Friends in March 2001. If you don’t receive one, monthly meetings will receive some extra copies and you will be able to see the Advance Program on the web at www.fgcquaker.org/gathering/.
