Salem Quarterly Meeting: 1999 Goals

Steering Committee

  1. SPIRITUAL GROWTH—WORSHIP AND MINISTRY

    1. Offer spiritual development activities at the Quarter level

    Means for accomplishment:
    • Provide staff support for:
      • Quarterly Meeting Worship and Ministry Committee
      • Tri-Quarterly Gathering
    • Foster connections with the PYM Meeting for Worship and Ministry (formerly Worship and Ministry Committee)
    • Organize trips, on some regular basis, to Pendle Hill lectures
  2. OUTREACH

    1. Nurture our members (inreach)
    2. Keep the Quarter informed of events happening in the monthly meetings
    3. Explore and identify what Friends have to offer in the meetings and to the world
    4. Search for and explore new ways for outreach

    Means for accomplishment:
    • Provide staff support for
      • Quarterly Meeting Outreach Committee
      • Salem Quarterly Meeting Retreat Planning Group
    • Revise and/or expand the Quarterly Meeting’s Yellow Pages listings
    • Establish a regular column in the newsletter focusing on outreach
    • Continue the Quarterly Meeting calendar of events
    • Encourage support for Friends School
    • Continue the Quarterly Meeting summer picnic
    • Initiate new signage for all Quarterly Meeting properties
    • Publicize to monthly meetings new signage, and coordinate ordering and purchasing
    • Educate members concerning the new PYM structure
    • Produce Salem Quarter News
    • Develop secondary uses for Salem Quarter News
  3. STEWARDSHIP

    1. Increase an awareness of stewardship of everything that Quarterly Meeting owns

    Means for accomplishment:
    • Prepare and publicize an inventory of what the Quarter owns
    • Create opportunities for Friends to work with property
    • Investigate location of a Salem Quarter information center (at Friends School?) to archive and display Quarterly Meeting historic material
    • Improve preservation and use of Quarterly Meeting records and materials
  4. YOUTH

    1. Encourage and support programs for our young people

    Means for accomplishment:
    • Provide staff support for
      • Quarterly Meeting youth group, of which Young Friends are members
    • Suggest to Quarterly Meeting that the Youth Group be a regularly nominated Quarterly Meeting committee, which would then
      • Recruit and support volunteers who come forward to work with youth, especially parents with children between the ages of 7 and 10
      • Seek more volunteers to help with sleepovers at Quarterly Meeting for children of middle school and high school age
      • Encourage adults to serve as Friendly Adult Presences at PYM youth programs
      • Encourage youth to participate in PYM youth groups
    • Provide opportunities for at least one intergenerational community service project for Quarterly Meeting youth and adults
    • Plan a program for Quarterly Meeting Overseers and youth on the subject of draft registration and conscientious objection
    • Explore, in all ways practical, the possibilities of a paid staff person to work with youth
    • Assist any and all First-day School teachers in intervisitation projects and in the full utilization of PYM Religious Education facilities
    • Provide a regular Salem Quarter News column for First-day School teachers to publicize ideas, projects, and classes “that work”
  5. CARE OF MEMBERS

    1. While this area is considered primarily a monthly meeting responsibility, the Steering Committee will support monthly meetings in their efforts to serve the personal and spiritual needs of their members and attenders.

    Means for accomplishment:
    • Provide consultation and educational opportunities for monthly meeting Overseers
    • Facilitate formation of intermeeting care committees as requested
    • Facilitate clearness procedures as requested
    • Investigate need for support groups and be sensitive to expressed areas where support might be needed
    • Encourage the Coordinator to
      • Visit individual monthly meetings regularly
      • Make presentations to adult First-day School classes
    • Support the Quarterly Meeting in exploring its responsibility toward care of members
  6. TESTIMONIES AND CONCERNS

    1. Explore ways to incorporate the development, expression, and ongoing exercise of testimonies and concerns into the Quarterly Meeting

    Means for accomplishment:
    • Clarify and publicize the channels for moving a concern from the monthly meetings, through the Quarter, to Yearly Meeting
    • Establish channels for coalescing monthly meetings’ concerns and bringing together the bearers of those concerns
    • Explore re-establishing legislative visitation and Congressional seminars
