First-day School Notes

Spice Comes to Woodstown

SPICEWhat do the Spice Girls singing group and Woodstown First Day School have in common? After reading a short article in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting News with the acronym SPICE highlighing the testimonies—Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality—Donna Gibson and I were inspired to incorporate this into our First Day School Program at Woodstown MM. We started out with the Spice Girls CD to warm our students to the idea (middle school girls loved it; the boys not so keen on it ).

After explaining what each of the testimonies meant, we started hunting for things in our everyday lives that supported these testimonies. We read children's books and fairy tales and related their messages to the relevance of the estimonies (The Rough Face Girl, a native American version of Cinderella, The Little Red Hen, etc.).

Then each of the students made a bookmark to highlight the testimony that meant the most to them. Finally, with the help of Jeff Gibson, the students performed a “Rap Song” about the Testimonies during our Easter Program.

And now, every time we hear any song or the letters come together, SPICE only represents the value and meaning of the testimonies.

With the help of Bob Foulks, the testimonies were spotlighted in the Easter story:

Equality:

At the Last Supper, Jesus said: “If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet."

Peace:

In the garden, Jesus told Peter: “Put away your sword. For all who draw the sword shall die by the sword.”

Integrity:

Even in the face of death, Jesus spoke honestly to Pilate: “You say that I am a king. I was born and came into the world for this one purpose, to speak about the truth.”

Simplicity:

As Jesus was dying, soldiers bet for his only possession—his robe.

Community:

The events after the resurrection showed a powerful community of changed people who were now able to suffer through hardship, harassment, and death because of their faith in the living presence of Jesus.

The Spice Rap

What’s the word? SPICE!!!! What’s the word? SPICE IS THE WAY TO GO!!!!

Simplicity is simple, and you know it’s right. Squanderin’ money gets ya into a fight.

Peace, it rules, and you know that it’s true. It’s the thing I need to get along with you. Don’t yell and sing those fightin’ songs, when you can help others and right their wrongs.

Integrity is always bein’ true to your word. It’s the most honest testimony I’ve ever heard.

Livin’ and a-sharin’ all together’s really fun. Community is helpin’, workin’, playin’ all in one.

Equality means everyone is equal, and that’s cool.

Respecting other is what’s right and is the golden rule!!

“S”—SIMPLICITY

“P”—PEACE

“I”—INTEGRITY

“C”—COMMUNITY

“E”—EQUALITY!

What’s the word? SPICE!!!!
