FALL 1999
Phil Anthony
COORDINATOR Phil Anthony TELEPHONE (856) 769-0066 FAX (856) 769-1416 salemqtr@verizon.net WEBSITE www.pym.org/salem-qm/ Another quiet, lazy summer? Not hardly at least not from where the Coordinator sits in his air-conditioned (thank Heaven!) office at the Woodstown meetinghouse.
Residential Yearly Meeting is over, and with it a program focussing on PYM's regional staff, including me. I was very glad to see the few of you who attended and wish there had been more. But Salem Quarter News followed immediately, along with preparations for the Salem Quarter Retreat at the Burlington Meeting House, 20-22 August. (If you haven't registered already, there's a form online.) Tri-Quarterly Gathering comes the following month, 17-19 September. If you need a registration form, give me a call; I'm also registrar for that.
And of course we have Quarterly Meeting starting at 3:00 PM Sunday, 12 September, at Greenwich's Lower Meeting House. We're honored to have Elizabeth C. Marsh, clerk of PYM's Peace and Concerns Standing Committee, who will talk with us about leadings and the process for carrying them to Yearly Meeting.
Nor have the other meetings been idle. Mickleton is gearing up for the celebration of its meetinghouse's bicentennial, rescheduled for Sunday, 3 October. Woodbury has had a full summer program of Friday night potluck-and-discussion sessions. Seaville has continued its summer beach meetings for worship. It's also preparing for its first meeting retreat, co-facilitated by the Coordinator, on Saturday, 25 September.
In early August, Seaville hosted two of the Hibakusha survivors of the 1945 atomic bombing of Japan. The next day they travelled to Woodstown for a talk and covered-dish lunch. Woodstown has also been the host for a series of meetings on sponsoring refugees in the Quarter. And June saw a group of about 20 Mullica Hill members gathered at the home of Jack and Peggy Warner for potluck supper and the Coordinator's program on leadings.
We also welcome two new Steering Committee members this summer. Kitty Ford and Sherry Gowen of Salem succeed Melissa Medford and Mary Waddington. My personal thanks to both Melissa and Mary, and I look forward to working with Kitty and Sherry.
The big news at Residential Yearly Meeting this year is the Covenant on Education and a pilot project for funding Quaker children at Friends' schools. Also, General Secretary Thom Jeavons issued a challenge for PYM to understand and articulate its mission. Look for events around all of these later this year.
A final note: I've added the address of the Salem Quarter Web site to the box above. Among its features is an electronic version of the Quarter Calendar. Thanks to Webmeister Mario Cavallini of Mickleton, items of interest are posted soon after they come in to the Coordinator's office. Visit the site frequently!
