WINTER
1999 Sandra Boone
Woodbury MM
The Ad Hoc Working Group, under the care of the Quarterly Meeting Steering Committee, held its meeting on Thursday, September 30, 1999. We reviewed the following points:
During Salem Quarterly Meeting on Sunday, September 12, 1999, at Greenwich MM, it was agreed to extend the Ad Hoc Working Groups examination of the condition of Kosovar refugees to include refugees and immigrants from other parts of the world. To further this effort, Elizabeth Thomas of Woodbury MM was named to attend board meetings of PRIME-ECR, the local arm of the World Council of Churches that handles refugee matters. She will contact David Repenning, chairman of the PRIME-ECR board, attend meetings, and bring us essential details which are needed in order for us to understand the various forms of assistance provided to these families. The Quarter encouraged the working group to report these findings.
The Quarter supported individual monthly meetings joining together in an effort to support refugees/immigrants.
The Quarterly Meeting Steering Committee will stage a presentation that will lay out the components of PRIME-ECR some time in the future.
Additionally, the Ad Hoc Committee discussed how to broaden our group. It was decided that the working group would best serve the Quarter if a clerk was appointed. Sandra Boone of Woodbury MM accepted this position. The group identified the need to investigate its spiritual basis for this group. Why are we drawn to this cause? We can identify that we are being led to something, but what? We will be contacting other groups, Quaker and non-Quaker, which have been working with refugees to hear their perspectives and actions. We discussed our need to reach out, receive help, respond in timely ways, be prepared to be helpers, examine our own egos, find peace within ourselves, and recognize that of God in ourselves and in others.
We recognized that we do not need to know our specific direction before we enter into a sharing session. Therefore, we look to invite others to join with us in our exploration. We will be in touch with monthly meetings in the near future. If there is a group that would like to have a sharing session with us, please call either Sandy Boone or the Coordinator, Phil Anthony, (856)769-0066.
Our next meeting will be held Tuesday, November 30, 1999, at Woodstown MM. We will gather at 6:00 PM for a self-pay pizza dinner, followed by business at 7:00; call the Coordinator to order pizza.
