Friendly Justice

Lois Dinshah
Mullica Hill MM

The Friendly Justice newsletter came about from various ideas that originated in the Committee for Criminal Justice, which became the Concerns Group for Criminal Justice, a name change due to the new structure in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting as of 4/98. This group had for some time wanted to do some reaching out to others who are interested in criminal justice, to find ways to better communicate with the various meetings and committees of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. There are various small groups of people scattered around PYM who are doing things in this field but don’t know the activities of others. Given the recent changes in PYM’s working structure, it became clear that there was a need for some type of resource that could serve as a clearing house for vital information and communication on criminal justice issues. The Friendly Justice newsletter is dedicated to helping in facilitating a rich sharing among its readers.

How I was led to this project: During the four plus years I was clerk of the Committee on Criminal Justice, I often had much information that I sent out to the members of the committee and others on the mailing list. I felt that there was so much information available that others who might be interested should have that information, and that I should share the information with as many people as possible. During the time I was clerk the members wanted to find ways to communicate with others in PYM. This idea came to me during my private quiet time. I meditated on it and it became clear that it was right for me to do.

Friendly Justice is a newsletter on criminal justice issues, edited by Lois Dinshah. The first issue went out 3/1/99, to 187 PYM members and 30 others in the United States of America, plus two in Canada. In response to the initial mailing, additional requests were received and responded to. The second issue went out 6/29/99 to 234 people (197 PYM and 40 others) in the United States, plus two in Canada and two in England. The circulation is growing, which shows it is filling an unmet need. The responses have been positive. Using the mailing machine at Friends Center certainly did reduce the mailing cost.

There will be no summer issue due to Lois’ mother passing.

Interested people may write to Friendly Justice, P.O. Box 385, Malaga, N.J. 08328-0385.

Lois Dinshah’s publication of Friendly Justice has been supported by Mullica Hill Monthly Meeting, Salem Quarterly Meeting, and Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. The description provided here was written last summer and will appear in the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Yearbook. Following Lois’ report to Quarterly Meeting in September, it was minuted that information about Friendly Justice and criminal justice issues should appear in Salem Quarter News. We look forward to future reports. — Ed.
