SUMMER
2000 Sondra Ball
Mickleton MM
You gave us
squash and tomatoes
from your garden,taught my son
to draw a warrior
for art class,led my daughter
to goat and chicken pens,
laughingat her doubts.
You fed us baked chicken,
chocolate cake,and stories
about the ghetto children
you broughtto your land
to sleep under summer stars
in tents,the house
you helped build one summer
with Bill Buckley,the Mexican
family you embraced
with joy.And now,
walking through Mickletons
cemetery,I recall
words one woman spoke
some weeks ago:Anyone
who loves gardens and children
is great.RETURN TO TABLE OF CONTENTS
