Salem Quarterly Meeting: 2000 Goals

  1. SPIRITUAL GROWTH — WORSHIP & MINISTRY
    1. Offer spiritual development activities at the Quarter level
    2. Nurture our members (inreach)

      Means for accomplishment
    • Provide staff support for
      • Quarterly Meeting Worship & Ministry Committee
      • Quarterly Meeting Retreat Planning Group
    • Organize workshops and/or events at the Quarterly Meeting level
    • Use the Newsletter and calendar to support and publicize monthly meeting events
    • Support the Tri-Quarterly Gathering
    • Continue the Quarterly Meeting summer picnic

  2. OUTREACH
    1. Actively solicit information from monthly meetings so that the coordinator may successfully keep the Quarter informed of each monthly meeting’s activities
    2. Explore and identify what Friends have to offer in the meetings and in the world
    3. Search for and explore new ways for outreach
    4. Encourage support for Friends School and Friends Home

      Means for accomplishment
    • Provide staff support for
      • Quarterly Meeting Outreach Committee
    • Continue the Quarterly Meeting calendar of events
    • Monitor and creatively assess the Quarterly Meeting’s Yellow Pages listings in the year 2000
    • Produce Salem Quarter News
    • Use Salem Quarter News to
      • continue support for Friends Home
      • facilitate regular column about Society of Friends in Friends School newsletter to parents
      • focus on outreach
    • Complete, in the year 2000, the project of erecting accurate, up-to-date signage on all Quarterly Meeting properties
    • Develop both Quarterly Meeting and monthly meeting content for Web site

  3. TESTIMONIES
    1. Explore ways to incorporate Testimonies and Concerns into the Quarterly Meeting

      Means for accomplishment
    • Assist in channeling monthly meeting concerns to Yearly Meeting
    • Be a channel for coalescing concerns and be aware of those concerns.

  4. STEWARDSHIP
    1. Increase awareness of stewardship for everything that the Quarterly Meeting owns

      Means for accomplishment
    • Prepare and publicize an inventory of what the Quarterly Meeting owns
    • Create opportunities for Friends to work with property
    • Investigate location of Salem Quarter information center (at Friends School?) to archive and display Quarterly Meeting historical material
    • Request Salem Quarterly Meeting to appoint ad hoc group to improve preservation and use of Quarterly Meeting records and materials. This group would perform immediate inventory of records and materials and decide which should be either archived, distributed/disseminated, or disposed of

  5. YOUTH
    1. Encourage and support programs for our young people

      Means for accomplishment
    • Encourage adults to serve as Friendly Presences at PYM youth programs
    • Encourage youth to participate in PYM youth groups
    • Provide opportunities for at least one intergenerational community service projects for Quarterly Meeting youth
    • [In conjunction with a monthly meeting Peace & Concerns Committee or Overseers] Plan a program for Quarterly Meeting overseers and youth on the subject of draft registration and conscientious objection
    • Assist any and all First-Day School teachers in intervisitation projects and in the full utilization of PYM Religious Education facilities

  6. CARE OF MEMBERS

    While this area is considered primarily a monthly meeting responsibility, the coordinator can be helpful by making presentations to adult First-Day School classes and will regularly visit individual monthly meetings.

    1. Support monthly meetings in their efforts to serve the spiritual and personal needs of their members and attendees
    2. The Quarterly Meeting will explore its responsibility toward care of members

      Means for accomplishment
    • Investigate need for support groups and be sensitive to expressed areas where support might be needed
    • Provide opportunities for monthly meeting “officers” (or committees) to share support
    • Organize the procedures and resources to support care committees and other means for support of members
