SUMMER
2000
Salem Quarter RetreatChel Avery, our facilitator, is a mediator, consultant, and trainer in the field of conflict resolution. She has been active in high school and college programs and served as staff at Pendle Hill. Currently she is Quakerism Coordinator at Abington Friends School.
The program:
The retreat will start Friday night with an intergenerational Peaceable Kingdom Tableau that will introduce participants to one another and present "conflict as a fundamental part of our liveseven in the midst of 'a hotbed of social rest.'" Saturday will turn to the body of the program:
- Who Am I in Conflict?
- Conflict styles and our personal conflict temptations.
- Speaking Our Truths.
- Communicating in conflict, both speaking and listening. Clarifying which truths we need to speak, and what questions to ask.
- Forgiveness and Reconciliation.
- How does forgiveness work? What can we ask of ourselves and one another? What if we arent forgiven back?
Sunday before worship we'll explore Other Peoples Conflictshow we can help when others are in a dispute.
We hope youll come for the full Retreat. But if you cant, the Saturday program is self-contained; you dont need the Friday or Sunday material to take full advantage of it. And if you have questions, call the Coordinator at (856)769-0066.
Schedule:
The Burlington Meeting House will be open for check-in after dinner, starting at 7:00 pm Friday evening. The program will start at 8:00 pm. Saturday and Sunday, yoga will be offered at 6:00 am, followed by breakfast, and the program reconvening at 9:00. Program activities will be offered throughout the day, with free time during the afternoon and evening. Saturday evenings program runs 7:30 to 9:00 pm. Well finish up with lunch at noon Sunday, and expect our cleanup to be complete by 2:00 pm.
Participants will be divided up into small groups for work and worship sharing. Well be responsible for our own food preparation and cleanup, as well as for general building cleanup Sunday. Saturday dinner will be pot-luck; bring your favorite dish to shareand remember our vegetarian and vegan friends! We hope the experience of work and worship with the same small group all weekend will help us get to know each other in ways no program ever could by itself.
What to bring:
The Burlington Meeting House provides bunk beds in open rooms on the two upper floors of the conference center. Youll provide your own single-bed sheets and pillows. There are showers, so remember soap, shampoo, and bath towels along with toilet articles. Bring along paper, pens, and pencils for journalling, books you might want to read in spare time, modest pajamas, flashlights, and comfortable clothes. Burlington Meeting House has a piano, but other musical instruments would be fun. And of course theres your contribution to the Saturday pot-luck dinner.
New this yearOffsite sleeping:
For those who dont like bunk bed sleeping arrangements, theres a Howard Johnsons Motor Inn about three miles from the Burlington Meeting House. Cost for rooms there (two people) is $75 per night. For children, the charge is $20 per additional person in a room.
Youll have to make your own arrangements. People wishing to take advantage of this option should call Howard Johnsons directly at (609)267-6550. Sorrywe cant offer any price reduction for the Retreat if you choose this option.
Directions:
Take I-295 to Exit 47 or the New Jersey Turnpike to Mount Holly. Turn onto Route 541 west to Burlington. When you reach Route 130 go straight across onto High Street. Follow High Street until it crosses Broad Street (the street with the train tracks). The meetinghouse is at 340 High Street, a red brick building behind a brick wall on the left. To unload, you can enter through the first gate in the brick wall; theres public parking (no charge) across the street after you have your luggage out. The meetinghouse is about 4.3 miles from the New Jersey Turnpike, or 2.7 miles from I-295.
