SUMMER
2000 Drew Smith
Associate Head of School
I am writing to update Salem Quarter on the progress our faculty has made towards establishing Quaker business practice in our division faculty meetings. In my previous column, I indicated that the most difficult challenge that faced us as we change the manner in which our meetings operate is to help everyone on the faculty begin to feel Quaker process at work.
To that end, Chris Mahon, a member of the Quarter and one of our fourth grade teachers, volunteered to clerk division faculty meetings for a time. Those meetings were planned by an agenda committee that included the clerk and the division principal who reviewed agenda items submitted by faculty. The agenda committee process allowed each issue to be dealt with, either by the full faculty or by passing the item along to be considered or acted upon in a more appropri ate way. As many of you in the Quarter know, Chris is an experienced clerk and her example was effective in socializing Quaker business practice among all of our faculty. Division meetings also provided opportunity for several members of the faculty to serve as recording clerks, a job some might argue is as important as that of clerk!
I feel confident that by next fall, our faculty will include two faculty clerks, who will both clerk faculty meetings, and help to plan the agenda for those meetings. Additionally, our parents organization has recently convened several meetings to review bylaws. Their hope is that the parent organization meetings can also feel more in line with Quaker process.
I hope to continue to use this letter to keep the Quarter updated on important news from the school. I have provided space in the schools Notes for Parents for the Quarterly meeting. So far we have published three articles from the Quarter, and I know that your voice is an important one to keep in the forefront of all of our efforts.
