WINTER
2000 Nine Friends (George and Cindy Crispin, Sondra Ball, Mario Cavallini, Gloria Horvay, Marcia Gaspar, Mary Waddington, Peggy Warner, and Phil Anthony) met in Hancocks Bridge, 2 September 2000, from 6:15 to 7:50, to discuss possible uses and improvements for the Alloways Creek Meetinghouse.
We recommend to the Quarter the following priorities for renovation:
- Make basic repairs (interior of the East wall, windows, door hinges, etc.).
- Install workable stoves for heating (replace two current wood stoves, repair or replace flues and chimney liners).
- Extend electrical service for lighting and fans (freestanding units, to not impair historical accuracy).
- Construct an outbuilding for toilet and kitchen facilities (perhaps also a shower).
If the Quarter decides to construct an outbuilding, we should invest early in consulting an architect, to assure that all appropriate concerns are addressed, including planning a building that may be adapted or expanded readily in the future. We note that a house across the street from the meetinghouse is being refurbished; if it becomes available for sale, we might purchase it rather than build a new structure.
Possible uses for the Alloways Creek Meetinghouse include:
- Individual retreats.
- Teen retreats.
- Salem County Historical Society functions.
- Participation in the NJ Historical Trail.
- Hancocks Bridge community functions.
- Salem Quarter worship events (but not a worship group, which would likely draw members away from Salem Monthly Meeting).
While we have interested persons and funds already dedicated to the Meetinghouse, the way forward would be easier if we could find:
- An established, readily accessible group of people who can be called upon to take reservations for use of the building, conduct tours, unlock and tidy the building for events, etc.
- One or more patrons to offer financial support.
- A consulting architect, who might volunteer some services.
At the Quarters direction, the group stands ready to meet again on October 15th.

George Crispin convened the meeting after a brief period of worship. It was a small group of Friends who gathered at the Alloways Creek Meetinghouse on Sunday afternoon, October 15, to continue the discussion about expanding uses of and discerning future plans for the old building.
After reviewing the ideas which emerged at the last meeting, Jane Lankitus mentioned that the Hancock House will be open on December 2 in conjunction with the Salem Holiday events. Friends decided that this would be a wonderful opportunity to share our old building with the community and to encourage Quarter Friends to become involved for a special event. Discussion ensued to outline plans to pursue this idea of an Open House from 10:00 to 4:00 on that Saturday, followed perhaps by another meeting with a potluck supper. Friends noted several contacts which need to be made and the need for publicity and coordination of this event.
The opportunity arose to have a conversation with resident across the street from the Meetinghouse. All of us present toured the old house (which exists directly across the street from the Meetinghouse) and discussed the possibility of renovating it to use for future retreats in conjunction with the Alloways Creek Meetinghouse. George recorded her name and number for further discussions about this possibility.
George thanked Friends for participating and closed the meeting with a brief period of worship.
