SUMMER
2001 Sondra Ball
Mickleton MM
As you dance in the darkness
under blazing midnight stars,
remember those before you
so you can know who you are.
Think on the babies sleeping
safe inside their mothers arms,
and the children of their children
who ought not to suffer harm.
When you raise your pipe tonight
underneath a slender moon,
raise it high for the children
who will work through summer noons.
Raise it high for the elders
who have given us our lives.
Raise it high for the sisters
born to share our aches and strifes.
As you dance in the darkness
under blazing midnight stars,
lift your own pipe up higher,
and remember who you are.
Do not forget the old ones
who have kept our culture grand
through the slaughters and the lies
of the ones who stole our land.
As you raise your pipe tonight
underneath the new moons light,
raise it high for the People
who kept dancing through the night.
As you dance in the darkness
under blazing midnight stars,
remember all the People
so you can know who you are.RETURN TO TABLE OF CONTENTS
