Farm Experience

I drove the six kids to his house.
None of them had seen a farm before.

They shied from the horses, laughing
nervously, and fled imaginary

spiders and bumblebees. He laughed
at them. “It’s winter,” he said. “No bugs.”

He taught them to mount, and led them
down bridle paths under bright night skies.

When they returned, their eyes were wide
with the wonder of horses and stars.
