FALL 2001
Drew Smith
Head of School
Summer has been a time of great change to the schools landscape. Since early in May the High Street side of campus has looked almost lunar! Earth-moving equipment has regraded the property to accommodate a new parking lot, and most important, a new building. As I write this message to all of you, the forms are in place for the foundation to be poured.
Getting to this stage of the building process has required countless hours of planning and labor, most of it in Board of Trustees subcommittees. And most of those subcommittees count among their number members of the Salem Quarter. The Finance, Development, Property, and Building Committees are all led in significant ways by the Quarter. In fact, I can honestly say that much of the expert advice and guidance I have received as I help to manage this project comes from some quarter of the Quarter. Additionally, Friends have been incredibly generous in their financial support of this project, both corporately as Monthly Meetings and individually.
I mention all of this because I believe it is important for all of us to know, and to keep in the front of our minds, that Salem Quarter and the Friends School have incredibly strong bonds relative to the stewardship of this school. Every important milestone in the schools history has been shaped and informed by members of Salem Quarter. It can truly be said that the school would not be here without the dedication and support of Friends close by. As I look to future milestones in the schools life, I know I will also look to Friends for direction and support.
The Quaker Outreach Subcommittee hopes to broaden opportunities for Friends to become stewards of our school. Although the work of the Board is critically important, stewardship takes many forms, from a Friendly presence at Meeting for Worship to helping to plan a service project. Because many of our school families are not Friends, I feel it is important that we provide as many opportunities as possible for those families to know who we Friends are, to know what leads us, and to know how a Friends School defines itself as such.
Slowly but surely, our new building takes shape. And slowly but surely, the school tries to integrate itself into an appropriate place within Salem Quarter. I welcome your ideas and leadings regarding stewardship of the school, and hope that you will all consider yourself invited to share those as your schedules permit.
