Salem Quarterly Meeting Worship & Ministry Report

September 9, 2001

The Salem Quarter Worship & Ministry Committee met on Ninth month 7th, 2001, at the home of Gloria and Bob Horvay, with eleven Friends in attendance from five monthly meetings within the Quarter. We convened near the appointed hour of 7:30 pm and began with a period of worship.

First, our Quarterly Meeting clerk surveyed those present on behalf of PYM's Worship & Care Standing Committee to hear ways in which our monthly meetings have benefited by the groups under its care. Secondly, we agreed to oversee the Salem Quarter Retreat in August of 2002. This will be held in Burlington and facilitated by Michael Wajda and Alison Levie. A planning committee was named from those present. Next we discussed the possibilities of offering to the Quarter a workshop on Racism. We saw value in this topic but did not wish to oversee it. The clerk of Steering Committee will take this suggestion to September 9 business meeting. Lastly, a reminder was put forth of the proposed volunteer opportunity to bring pastoral care the Healthcare residents at the Friends Home. Five members of this committee have now offered to be a part of the team.

Phil Anthony then presented to those present his topic, which he had titled "Deepening the Spiritual Nurture in Our Monthly Meetings: A Case Study of a Work in Progress." This was a thought- provoking report of a monthly meeting in Pennsylvania currently laboring under the weight of those of its members who do not feel nurtured by its meetings for worship. He challenged us to look within our own monthly meetings and be sensitive to those who may feel unfulfilled. His message stimulated a period of sharing among us that was at once insightful and profoundly moving.

This committee meets next on Twelfth month 7th, 2001. It will be encouraging all seven of the monthly meetings within our Quarter to be represented.

Respectfully submitted,
Mary Waddington
Clerk
