From the Coordinator’s Desk

My practice during the time I’ve been your Coordinator, has been to visit each monthly meeting about the same number of times each year. Last year, for example, I worshipped with each meeting four times, plus attending one to three special events—anniversary celebrations, dinners, programs, and so on.

This past fall I realized that while this has been very satisfying to me, it may not have been as good use of my time as I’d hope. Two monthly meetings, largely for reasons of size and distance, have taken less part in the Quarter’s life while I’ve been here than the others. So I decided, with the Steering Committee’s approval, that I’ll be making more visits to those two meetings in 2002—Greenwich and Seaville.

I hope the other meetings will understand. I’ll still be joining you for worship two or three times, and I wouldn’t miss some of your special events for anything. You’re always welcome to call, too.

And I hope Greenwich and Seaville will also understand that I don’t want to be intrusive, or force myself on them. My goal is simply to be more available to them in whatever way they may find helpful.

As always, the Quarter continues to be active. The Greenwich Christmas breakfast was a delight, as always. Seaville has once again sponsored an inquirer’s day, particularly welcome with two new applications for membership in January.

Mickleton had two wonderful Christmas parties in December, and there was tender worship—including the opportunity to meet new attenders—at Woodbury. A soup sale at Mullica Hill benefitted their Education Fund. Many thanks to Salem for sponsoring Quakerism 101 and opening it free of charge to the entire Quarter.

And Woodstown’s Peace Center opened its doors in February. It’s a resource for learning and teaching about Holocaust, genocide, and racism. Videos, magazine articles, and curricula will be lent not only to Friends, but to the wider community as well; the meeting’s reaching out beyond Quakerism was signalled by the opening event’s including participants from other neighboring religious bodies.

Salem Quarter will have the opportunity to hear about and experience the Peace Center during our March Quarterly Meeting at Woodstown. The meeting’s Linda Jeffrey and Mary Mills will present a program about it, and it’ll be open for Friends to visit after worship.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Annual Sessions will be held at Arch Street this year, 21–24 March. This is a wonderful chance to meet people from the wider Quaker community. Your own meeting will have full information—or call me and I’ll have it mailed to you.

Finally, Gloria Horvay steps down as our clerk at March Quarterly Meeting. Thanks, Gloria, for your personal friendship and faithful service to the Quarter as clerk. I only hope I can expect to continue working with you in all our other Quarter activities!
