Gloria Horvay
Clerk, Salem Quarterly Meeting
ear Friends,
This is my last column as your clerk. The Nominating Committee has done an excellent job of finding a candidate who, upon your approval at the March business meeting, will be Salem Quarters new clerk.
We are fortunate to have many fine people doing the work of our Quarter. I felt the support of all these dedicated people the last six years as I learned how to clerk our business meetings. I am indebted to all of you who spent a Sunday afternoon participating in the Quarters business.
The clerks of our committees need to be recognized for their dedication to Salem Quarter: Mary Waddington, the shining light of Worship and Ministry; George Crispin, the steady hand caring for our properties with the Trustees; Sue Price-Redfern steering us through our Financial maze; and Peggy Warner, firmly but gently keeping all of us in our places for Nominating.
I have a special fondness for Steering Committee, as that is where my work in the Quarter began in the mid 1980s. Our current coordinator, Phil Anthony, was hired soon after I became Quarter clerk, and it has been uplifting to see the relationships he has built and the outreach he has accomplished with his travels to our meetings. Jack Mahon and Mario Cavallini have done outstanding jobs of leading the Steering Committee in their oversight of our coordinator program.
I would be remiss if I didnt also recognize the great job our officers are doing: Cindy Cox Crispin has been faithful and thorough as she records our business; and Dianne Herland Sloane has kept the dollars flowing as our Treasurer.
As this Notes from Gloria column is laid to rest, I need to thank Phil for suggesting I write it. At first I wondered if I had anything worthwhile to offer. I started by offering information about issues in the Quarter. I moved on to sharing spiritual insights I learned from audiotapes and books I studied. Eventually I felt more comfortable exploring personal and family happenings in the context of spiritual insights. And, of course, as a childrens librarian, I could not resist recommending a few good books from time to time.
Many good things are happening in the meetings around Salem Quarter. On March 10 we will experience the Peace Center, which dedicated people at Woodstown Meeting have established. I hope to see you all there.
