Descendents
of the Conquerors
live on rolling hills
broken by streams
and stones.Everywhere,
I see
their canals,
their temples,
their banks.I read about
their art,
their heroes,
their victories.The arrowheads,
the stone axes,
the carved canoes
of the Beothuk
are invisible,their music lost,
their lives forgotten.Yet the Beothuk
come to me
in dreams,
speaking an ancient tongue,asking me
to remember
their art,
their heroes,
their losses.Their words
echo around
the canals
and temples
and banks
of the Conquerors
as silently
as their forgotten lives. For only victors write history.
