SPRING 2003Gloria Horvay

as the Religious Society of Friends grown beyond the period in our history when eldering was harsh and punitive? Margery Larrabee thinks so. She is bringing a workshop to Salem Quarter this spring in which she will share her insights of the historical role eldering has played in the life of Quaker meetings, and the value it can have in the health of our meeting community today. Through the use of small group discussions, role-playing, and journaling, participants will gain experience in recognizing the shadow and substance in every individual. Everyone can learn and use eldering skills.
Margery Larrabee is a social worker and has been a Quaker for more than 50 years. She has experience with the FGC Traveling Ministries program, the PYM Spiritual Formation program, and the School of the Spirit. See Friends Journal, February 2003, page 25, for a reflection by Margery on how eldering and listening work together.
The workshop will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Mickleton Monthly Meeting, with a simple lunch provided at the Little Red Schoolhouse. We will gather at 9:00 am and finish by 4:00 pm. The fee is $25. There will be no child care. Registration is limited to Salem Quarter members and attenders through March 15; after that time, it will be opened to others outside the Quarter. Registration deadline is April 5. To register, send your check to the Coordinators office, PO Box 55, Woodstown, N.J. 08098. Questions? Call the Coordinator at (856)769-0066, or e-mail salemqtr@verizon.net.
You are invited to share in advance a written description of a situation in which you think eldering might be helpful or a situation in which you have found that eldering was helpful.
