Worship & Ministry Report

6 December 2002

Salem Quarter Worship & Ministry Committee met on 6 December 2002 at the home of Gloria and Bob Horvay, convening in worship at 7:45 pm. Individuals were present from Mickleton, Mullica Hill, and Woodbury Meetings, as well as the Quarter Coordinator.

After our opening worship, we settled again to focus on those in need and those for whom we felt appreciation.

The committee to plan the 2003 Quarter Retreat will gather on Tuesday evening, 10 December, at Woodstown Meetinghouse.

The balance of the evening was devoted to the possibility of reviving the practice of visiting our congressional representatives in Washington, D.C. In past years, a group of student and adult Friends would spend an evening or two at the William Penn House, where they would get a briefing on one or more current issues of public policy, and meet with Senators and Representatives (or their staff members) from our area.

The idea is not to present a “Salem Quarter platform,” but rather to establish communication between our political representatives and the South Jersey Quaker community. We would go to share and listen, and—if the legislator is open, as indeed some have been—to worship together.

Several individuals present in the Quarter have participated in previous visitations, and some have spoken recently about the possibility of doing so again. We do not know as yet whether one or more monthly meetings will do their own visitations, or if we should do one Salem Quarter visitation, or a combination of individual meeting and Quarter groups. And of course, a Salem Quarter visitation would need the approval of Quarterly Meeting. At present, we decided to check with individuals and our home meetings to assess interest, and to report our discussion to Quarterly Meeting, for the Quarter to receive as it is led. As we move forward, Roshan Dinshah has offered to coordinate our efforts.

We concluded in worship at about 9:30, after which many of us enjoyed browsing through and even buying books from an FGC Bookstore collection that was provided through the efforts of Bob Horvay and Sondra Ball. Worship & Ministry intends to meet again on 7 March 2003, the Friday evening before Quarterly Meeting, and we welcome participation from all the monthly meetings of Salem Quarter.

For the Committee,
Mario Cavallini, Clerk
