SUMMER 2003Mary Ellen Brooks

pring is here and just in time! Mother Natures Symphony of Snow in February showed that Friends Home at Woodstown residents, employees, staff, volunteers and friends have the right stuff. Our residents remained cheerful and upbeat, offering encouragement and support where they could. Employees and volunteers with four-wheel-drive vehicles shuttled fellow employees and staff between work and home. Some employees and staff literally lived at Friends Home for three or four days, sleeping on makeshift beds set up in quiet spots and empty rooms. Volunteers that could get to us came to lend a hand at mealtime, pitching in where they were needed. It is so good to know that caring and dedicated people surround you.
Rays of Light, our newsletter, was mailed March 7, 2003. If you are reading this and you did not receive Rays of Light, you are not on our mailing list. So many exciting things are happening at Friends Home and we want everyone in the Salem Quarter to know about them. In 1896, the men and women who comprised Salem Quarterly Meeting conceived of the idea that is today Friends Home at Woodstown. Their missionour missionis expanding to embrace more of our regions older adults. Just as the Quarter came together in 1896 to establish Friends Boarding Home, and again in 1976 to build Friends Home at Woodstown, we are counting on the Quarters encouragement and support to establish Friends Home at Woodstown as a continuing care retirement community (CCRC).
The addition of assisted living and the expansion of our skilled nursing facilities will allow us to provide state of the art care for our residents who need a little more help at this point in their lives. We want you to know about our joys and triumphs, the legacy we inherited and the new legacy we are striving to create. Please take a minute to call the Office of Institutional Advancement at 856-823-0229 and give us your name and address so we can be sure you are on our mailing list.
The Village at Friends Home has 44 reservations to date, and many more people express interest everyday. All 20 apartments and 24 of 47 cottages are reserved. This response illustrates the very real need for the CCRC option in our region.
Spring Annual Gift Campaign letters will be in the mail soon. All philanthropic gifts affirm our mission and encourage us to embrace the challenges ahead. Gifts to the Annual Gift Campaign directly benefit our Friends Home residents by helping to offset operating expenses. Today, organi zations like Friends Home struggle to carry on the vision of their foundersto serve people of all income levels. When you receive your Annual Gift Campaign letter, please consider making a gift to help us carry on the work Friends Home has done so well for 106 yearsprovide a home for men and women of moderate means. Remember, all gifts are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.
Its not too early to think about being part of Friends Home at Woodstowns Second Annual Golf Outing on Friday, October 10, 2003. We ask golfers to save the date and make up a foursome or two. Non-golfers can support us by contributing items for our Silent Auction, golfers prizes, gifts and goodie bags. Sponsorships are available and all cash/check donations are welcome. There is even an option to simply join us for the awards dinner and festivities. Watch your mail for more information.
