Salem Quarter Retreat

Fri-Sun, 15-17 August 2003

Simplicity

Simplicity isn’t a matter of wearing plain dress, nor of using the plain speech. It isn’t as easy to define as making ecologically sound choices or avoiding ostentation, though both of those may be part of one’s witness. It’s an attitude that affects every part of our lives: our choice of goods, our use of time, the activities we engage in. It’s also a spiritual discipline that helps us listen and respond to the Divine.

Chip Thomas grew up in Salem Quarter’s own Woodbury MM, and is now a member of Marlborough MM in Pennsylvania. He is a Friend of long standing, who honestly seeks the Light of the Spirit. Like many other Friends, he has found that his personal seeking is enhanced by the gift of simplicity. The weekend is an invitation to share what Friends have learned from this gift. This facilitator desires not to be a teacher, but to gather with others to be a student of the Spirit.

We’ll also have a program for children six years old through middle school, and another for ages two through five. The older kids will work with Dana Gayner of Salem MM, an experienced children’s facilita tor who uses her art as a teaching tool.

The program will start Friday night, run all day Saturday (with time out for relaxation and exploring the city of Burlington), and conclude on Sunday morning before worship. Following worship we’ll have lunch and clean-up before leaving. As usual, Saturday night will feature the traditional Salem Quarter potluck dinner, so be sure to bring along your favorite dish.

The Burlington Meeting House is a fully equipped conference center with bunk beds on the upper two floors. Check the Website, www.burlington-nj.net/Bus/MeetingHousePages/MeetingHouse.html, for information and directions. Bring journalling materials, modest PJ’s, sheets and pillows, musical instruments, comfortable clothes, and whatever else will help make the weekend relaxing, enjoyable, and a source of spiritual renewal. Questions? Call the Coordinator, (856)769-0066, e-mail salemqtr@verizon.net.

Please make your check for the Salem Quarter Retreat out to Salem Quarterly Meeting, and send it with your registration form to the Coordinator, Salem Quarterly Meeting, PO Box 55, Woodstown, N.J. 08098. Adults are $45 apiece, children in the program $30, with a family cap of $120.
