Quarterly Meeting Minutes

14 Twelfth-month 2003

Michael Gibson read three slightly revised queries suggested by Friends at the Salem Quarter Retreat in August, 2003.

The minutes from the September quarterly meeting were approved as published.

It was announced that Karen Paarz’ grant request for her work with the Man2Man program in Ireland was not approved by the European Union. She will continue to work in that field, but the work will be on a smaller scale than she had hoped.

The Meeting approved donating $300 to Elizabeth Thomas to help her attend a Friends World Committee for Consultation Triennial Gathering in New Zealand.

Bill Carrigan of Mickleton Meeting introduced himself as a new member of the American Friends Service Committee Corporation and offered his services to speak at meetings about AFSC and help Friends in their interactions with that committee.

Bill Carrigan also announced that he was organizing a two-day program at Rowan University for African American History Month. It would involve the showing on February 23, 2004, of a movie about school integration in Mississippi, and on February 24, 2004, a visit to and program at the former black school in Swedesboro. These programs would include discussion and education opportunities. Bill explained that Rowan University had purchased the film and arranged for space, but more funds were needed for publicity and arrangements. The quarterly meeting approved contributing up to $200 if the finance committee is able to allocate the money.

The quarterly meeting approved the following minute in appreciation of Torrey Reade’s efforts on behalf of the Lower Alloways Creek Meetinghouse:

Salem Quarterly Meeting, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, minutes its deep appreciation to Torrey Reade, Salem Monthly Meeting. Her dedication and hard work in shepherding the process of having the Lower Alloways Creek Meetinghouse in Hancock’s Bridge, N.J., entered on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places is only her latest gift to Salem Quarterly Meeting of making the meetinghouse accessible to Friends and the public.

We find it important to thank our Friend publicly. We recognize as well that the most meaningful thanks we can offer is to continue her work of finding ways that the historic structure we have care of can be not only a testimony to our past, but a living part of our living faith. We therefore rededicate ourselves to our own task of preserving the past while discerning how the meetinghouse can become once again a vibrant part of our Quarter’s fabric.

The Trustees’ report was read and accepted.

The Trustees’ report was followed by a period of discussion about how we might use the Lower Alloway’s Creek Meetinghouse, and the Quarterly Meeting united in asking the Trustees to suggest a process by which we might develop a plan for the use of it at our March meeting.

The report of the Worship and Ministry Committee was read and accepted. The Meeting approved having a Quarterly Meeting retreat again in 2004. The Committee on Worship and Ministry was asked to form a planning committee to determine the time, place, and program of that retreat.

The report from the Steering Committee was read and accepted. Only one response was received from the monthly meetings in answer to the questions asked by the Steering Committee at the September Quarterly Meeting. The report received from Woodbury Monthly Meeting was read. Other monthly meetings were reminded that responses were still valuable to the Steering Committee.

A minute from Burlington Quarterly Meeting about restorative justice was read. Salem Quarterly Meeting united with it, and copies will be sent to legislators in counties covered by our quarter as well as the clerks of our monthly meetings.

Quarterly meeting in June will be held at Red Bank Battlefield in National Park and include tours of the Whitall House. Details will be worked out by the Steering Committee.

The Quarter received a minute about the Progressive Student Alliance. There being no one present to speak to the minute, it was held over until the next quarterly meeting.

Elizabeth Thomas gave a brief update of improvements at Camp Darkwaters.

Copies of a minute from Pennsdale Monthly Meeting were distributed. The hour being late, it was held over until March quarterly meeting, thus giving the monthly meetings an opportunity to consider it before the quarterly meeting takes any action.

The clerk was asked to write minutes of appreciation to Margaret Wood for the presentation at the morning session on her work in South Africa and to Salem Monthly Meeting for hosting Quarterly Meeting.
