oesnt look much like the Salem Quarter News youve come to expect, does it? What happened?
Well, there were difficulties connecting with our printer when it was time to turn the sheets of paper I produce into the newsletter youve learned to love, all folded and stapled and ready to mail. The deadline for getting it to the printer cameand went. We began to look frantically around to figure out what to do.
The easiest thing, of course, would have been to skip an issue. We could photocopy the minutes of our March Quarterly Meeting for distribution at Red Bank in June, and copies of the proposed budget (approved in principle, subject to tweaking) could have been sent to the monthly meetings for their consideration. After some thought, it was decided the minutes and proposed budget were important enough to warrant more than that.
There was also the question of expense, however, We learned that eight sheets of paperbasically, what you have in your hand right nowcopied at one of the major office service companies would have cost 50 per cent more than our normal 20-page Salem Quarter News. Clearly that was unacceptable.
Then an employee of a Catholic college in northwestern Philadelphiamy wifecame to the rescue. Chestnut Hill College offers its staff the use of its copying equipment at cost. Thanks to Chestnut Hill College, we even have the list of Quarter officers and committees for you on time!
For the future, weve been in touch with the printer, and the difficulties we had have been worked out. For the Fall Salem Quarter News, we can expect our usual format.
When you receive Salem Quarter News, you know Quarterly Meeting is near. See the last two pages of this issue for details of our program at the Red Bank Battlefield, National Park, N.J., on Sunday, 13 June. Kathryn Dodson of Mullica Hill MM is curator of the James and Ann Whitall House there. Shell tell us how her professional encounter with that 18th-century Quaker family and its descendents has enriched her life as a Friend.
Itll be fun for the kids, too. Woodbury MM will put on a childrens program of noncompetitive games in the playground near the pavilion. Please come join us.
