Thom Jeavons, general secretary of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, travelled to the Palestinian city of Ramallah last year with a contingent of Friends from PYM and other U.S. yearly meetings to celebrate the opening of the rebuilt Ramallah Friends Meeting House. PYM was a major contributor to the reconstruction, and continues to work in partnership with the Quaker meeting there.

Friends who were present will remember the movement of the Spirit among us when Jean Zaru, clerk of the Ramallah meeting, addressed annual sessions on a Thursday night four years ago. Her topic was keeping faith in the midst of trials. At the end of her address, members of PYM spontaneously asked what we could do to help reconstruct the meetinghouse as a place of worship and a center for peace activities. Jean was taken entirely by surprise at the offer; she had not come to plead for funds but to share her faith! So was Thom, I believe, and Arlene Kelly, then clerk of Yearly Meeting. Yet by Sunday morning, a plan was in place.

During his visit, Thom was struck forcefully by the extreme difficulties Ramallans face in trying to carry on their lives. His PowerPoint presentation, first shown at this year's Annual Sessions, not only celebrates the reopening of the meetinghouse but also documents the daily trials of Palestinian citizens and the work that remains to be done in bringing peace to the troubled land. Join us for this powerful presentation at Quarterly Meeting on Sunday, 11 September, at Greenwich MM's Orthodox meetinghouse (lower arrow, below). Full schedule appears with the Coordinator's column.
