Trustees Report

September 2005

The Trustees are happy to report that the Lower Alloway Creek Meetinghouse has a new roof and that other repairs have been completed. The cost of the new roof is about $11,000. The Salem Quarter Treasurer's Report will have the exact amount. This new roof will prevent any further interior deterioration and damage. Thanks to Torrey Reade for taking the lead in this project.

The Cedar Hill Cemetery in Harmersville is in good shape with regular lawn maintenance. There are a few branches in the cedar trees which need pruning. Trustees will contact a tree service for the pruning. However, if any Quarterly Meeting member has the equipment and time to help us, please contact Woody Gross at (856)769-3657, <gross @umdnj.edu>.

The Maurice River Cemetery at Port Elizabeth was in poor shape due to neglect. Also, a large oak tree fell and may have damaged some of the tombstones. The extent of the damage will not be known until the lawn service returns to mow the area. In the process of getting bids to remove the fallen tree, it was discovered that there are two other trees that must come down before they cause further damage to the property. After getting three bids for removal, Keith's Tree Service was selected to remove the fallen tree and take down the other two trees for $2,600. He is in the process of removing the trees and debris. Kyle's Lawn Service was hired to mow the cemetery and maintain it for the remainder of the mowing season. The first mowing cost $600; the two remaining mowings will be $400 each.

I ask Friends to help the Trustees monitor the Port Elizabeth burial ground, since most of us live a distance from the site. The cemetery is on Route 47 in Port Elizabeth, about one mile from the end of Interstate 55. If you are traveling that way, please take notice of the cemetery and notify me if anything needs to be done.

The next meeting of the Trustees will be September 22, 2005 at 7:00 pm at Woodstown Meeting.

For the Trustees,
Woody Gross, clerk
