SPRING 20069 December 2005
alem Quarter Worship & Ministry Committee met on December 9th, at the home of Bob and Gloria Horvay, convening in worship at 7:30 pm. Friends were present from Mickleton, Mullica Hill, Salem, and Woodbury Monthly Meetings, as well as the Quarter Coordinator.
We put aside our habit of reporting on events in our monthly meetings, but continued for the entire session in discussion that never quite departed from worship, with attention to the topic of courage. There were many roots for this topic: events in the world in general and the Christian Peacemaker Teams hostage situation in particular; the personal losses encountered in many of our meetings recently; and the essay by the General Secretary in the November/December PYM News. However, these were simply a few of the springs that fed the flow of the spirit.
Our discussion was part worship, part practical advice and counsel, part celebration, part storytellingbut all part of our Salem Quarter community coming together in the just-slightly-unconventional meetinghouse of the Horvay home.
After two very full hours, we were still discovering more springs to feed us and more streams leading into other parts of our individual and communal faith life. For this reason, we closed in worship without drawing any artificial "conclusion." For that same reason, I will not report any specific "lessons," but simply encourage Friends in your private worship, your family sharing, and your meeting life to ponder the meanings and sources of spiritual courage.
Worship and Ministry intends to meet again at the Horvay residence on 10 March 2006, the Friday evening before Quarterly Meeting, and we welcome participation from all monthly meetings of Salem Quarter.
For the Committee,
