Gathering for Children Within Salem Quarter

[This was presented at the March 2006 Quarterly Meeting by Patti Burns of Woodstown MM — ED.]

I have thought about this idea for a year or more. The idea was inspired by the positive experiences that my daughter had with PYM's Middle School Friends. I found that the Middle School Friends gatherings are a place where Quaker children validate each others' Quaker beliefs, especially those of peace and social justice, which are so challenged in their daily encounters. Here is a synopsis:

Children's Quarterly Service and Social Gathering

The vision is one of a low-key program that meets about four times per year, where our children (school age) from Salem Quarter could come together at each others' meetinghouses. The purpose would be to create a small service project at each gathering and to get to know each other. Although there are many options about dates and times, the idea of a Friday evening stems from discussions with some parents at Woodstown Monthly Meeting.

The vision involves simple service projects such as making soup for a soup kitchen or shelter, dog biscuits for the pound, and/or birthday cards for residents of Friends Home; projects that would be simple and meaningful, but would not require excessive coordination of the busy schedules of the adult members or our already over-programmed children; and projects that might provide older children with some leadership opportunity.
