Service Projects
One of the things that I look forward to when I visit FSMH is the students' art work and posters announcing the ongoing service projects. These posters hang in every building. The posters are decorated with joyful colors, designs and text describing the purpose of the project and the impact that the project will have on the receiving community.
Currently the signs depict a project in Kenya. A parent, Nancy Cimprich, is traveling for the second time this year to Kenya to work with an elementary school in a small community outside of Nairobi. This time she will carry suitcases full of shoes and a box of crayon for each student in the school. These donations will be made by FSMH.
Poetry Club
Recently the Middle School Poetry Club hosted a Poetry Slam at a local coffee house. Students and families gathered to support the students. Many of us were inspired by the creative passion self-confidence and poise of the students as they shared their personal feelings about topics such as growing up and war and their humorous takes on subjects like pancakes. Will Talbot, an 8th grader and Greenwich Monthly Meeting Friend provided me with a copy of his poem to share today:
Patti Burns, Quarter Liaison to the Friends School BoardThe Drum Roll Continues
I don't know why, but the drum roll continues.
People don't learn from their mistakes,
Many wars have been fought,
But the drum roll continues. The world doesn't learn the horror,
Terror, and death that comes of war,
But the drum roll continues.Wars fought to the death,
Why, does it matter what
God you believe in?
Why does it matter
What color your skin is?
But the drum roll continues. The world repeats its mistakes
No one is perfect,
But can't we all try?There shouldn't be a reason
Why the sun can't rise
On a nation, no not a nation,
a world, devoid of separation.
But the drum roll continues.Over time everything's insignificant.
The world forgets everything.
Not a person, not a place
Not a time. You may want to stop the world,
You might want to replay the past.
But the drum roll continues. It never stops.
Why does the drum roll continue?
