The grape hyacinth are in full bloom, drooping over fences and the branches of trees with their new greenery. The apple blossoms have almost disappeared by now, though I still see a few driving down Route 45. Azaleas and pansies abound.

It's a far cry from last February and March, and even most of April. Back then the chill got into my bones, along with several strains of flu virus that hit consecutively and made me feel as if I were slogging uphill through molasses in January. And the bouts of flu were followed by an ice storm during which I wrenched my side. That laid me up again.

The result was that like the spring itself, the Spring Salem Quarter News never appeared. By the time it got to be mid-April and it still wasn't off to the printer's, we gave up trying.

One result is a longer issue this time. An essay of Mary Waddington's that was scheduled for spring is here; so is art from the children's First-day School at Woodstown MM, for which I'm deeply grateful. Also, we're including the minutes of the December 2006 quarterly meeting (in print). They were available at our March quarterly meeting at Friends Village (as well as online), but we felt they should be put in everyone's hands whether they got to Woodstown or not.

As follow-up to that quarterly meeting, the Friends who attended asked for more time to listen to Patience Oakes. Her talk at Friends Village, where she's coordinator of social services, focussed on giving care to persons with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. We've asked her to provide an afternoon-long program with more detail and more chance for Friends who are or expect to be caretakers to ask about their particular situations.

Moses, by Sheila McHughThe program will take place at Friends Village on Saturday, 16 June, from 1:30 to 4:00 pm. There's no charge, but we're asking that attenders register for it to allow Friends Village to plan for space and refreshments. Just call the coordinator, or e-mail him thy name, address, telephone number, and monthly meeting.

In the meantime, Woodbury MM is busy planning for its Summer Seekers series of videos and discussion. The winning essays on peace from the contest sponsored by Mickleton and Mullica Hill MMs will be read at a ceremony on Sunday, 3 June; the location hasn't been determined yet, but will be announced via the e-mail contacts at your monthly meetings. The Salem MM Pot Pie Dinner was held at the end of April, and the Woodstown MM Strawberry Festival will happen on 19 May.

And Greenwich MM's Keith Talbot will be the featured speaker at the June quarterly meeting, which will be held at Seaville MM. Keith, an immigration attorney, will be speaking about his extensive experience with immigration issues. If that isn't enough to bring you to quarterly meeting, Seaville has also promised to provide its wonderful soups for our lunch.

Come July, Salem Quarter will be the center of PYM's attention. Our Residential Yearly Meeting will be held this year at Rowan University in Glassboro. We look forward to a large turnout of Salem Quarter Friends Thursday through Monday, 26-30 July. I hope to see many of you there!
