Prayer Partners

Lois Dinshah
Mullica Hill MM

The purpose of this is to invite people to become prayer partners.

At the Salem Quarter Worship and Ministry Meeting on Friday, September 7, 2007, we discussed the idea of what prayer partners might be. It was mentioned that people have different ways of praying. Some people pray with song, some with dance, some by going out in nature, some with knitting, and some in other ways. We considered the need for our communion with the divine to be expressed as well as experienced.

One thought was that prayer partners should have a similar level of spiritual development. It is not necessary that they have the same method of praying, but that they should understand the method of their prayer partner. They may be compatible in many ways, but may not be compatible for praying together.

The idea is to pray about the same things. If the partners wish to be together when they pray, that is fine. It is not necessary for them to be in the same room. They could be in different towns and still pray together. It helps if they do it at the same time. The idea is to pray for other people, groups, towns, cities, states, or whatever prayer is assumed needed.

It is okay to pray for each other, and is probably a good idea, but that is not the main purpose of the prayer partnership. However, if each person is prayed for to start with, then it may give each partner more power to send prayers to others.

We have read about, and many of us have experienced, the power of prayer. We know about prayer by a single person, and how helpful that can be. We know that prayer by a group is useful in many ways. There have been other things that partners have done that were helpful.

We felt that asking people to pray in partnership would be a good way to help people to feel the good that comes from getting to know a person through their prayer life, and experience the power of prayer when done together.

Between our private, individual connections with God, and our communal worship, there is also the deliberate, focused worship of a few, bonded in shared intent. We shared writings and experiences of such prayer partners, and came to a sense that we should develop this further.

We want to know if people would like to become prayer partners with others in Salem Quarter. We would also like to be aware of how many prayer partners there are and how long they stay as prayer partners.

Please come to the next Quarter Worship and Ministry Meeting where we will discuss further.
