WINTER 200812 Ninth Month 2008
Salem Quarter Worship & Ministry Committee met on 12 September 2008, at the home of Gloria and Bob Horvay, convening in worship at about 7:30 pm. Individuals were present from Mickleton and Mullica Hill Monthly Meetings, as well as the quarter coordinator.
After our opening worship, we entered into a discussion that defies distillation into a simple message. In retrospect, it was almost inevitable. We started with a consideration of how the silence of worship can gather us together but also can mask a wide variety of beliefs that we find difficult to discuss with one another. Our intent was to explore how we worship in ways beyond the stillness.
And thats how things got hard to boil down to a simple lesson. We ourselves did not have difficulty in discussing the topic; quite the opposite. Friends were thoughtful and clear, both in speaking and in listening. Rather, in speaking from the authentic sources of our experience and understanding, we put together quite a mosaic.
Personally, I came away with some previously held views confirmed and a couple of new notions to explore. However, I would not venture to summarize our discussion, for I am certain that each of us would write something different. As so often is the case with worship, being there was the only true way to get the message.
We concluded at about 9:30. Worship & Ministry intends to meet again on 12 December 2008, the Friday evening before quarterly meeting, and we welcome participation from all monthly meetings of Salem Quarter especially given the likelihood of more unrecordable experiences.
For the Committee,
