SPRING 2010December 13, 2009
Because income is down and the the Steering Committee oversees the Coordinator program, which is the largest part of the Salem Quarter budget, we have been looking for ways to cut expenses. We have no control over salary and benefits, which are by far the largest chunk of money. They are completely controlled by Yearly Meeting.
We have eliminated from our budget the cost of a display ad in the telephone directory. It cost $876 a year and yielded no phone calls.
We have looked the newsletter costs to see if there might be some savings there. Each newsletter costs about $1.00 to print, plus mailing costs. Our decision was not to cut content, but to use a black-and-white cover instead of a color cover. This will save about ten or fifteen cents a copy, or about $75 to $100 per issue. Unfortunately, recent changes in post office regulation require us to spend nearly all of this saving in mailing costs.
We apologize for the lateness of the recent issue of the Salem Quarter News. Our printer was more than a week late in delivering copies. This is a recurring problem that keeps getting worse and we will begin looking for a new printer
On a brighter note, we will have Elizabeth Gates of Lancaster Meeting address us at our March quarterly meeting. She will speak about the work of FWCC and how Salem Quarter Friends may participate in it.
