Thank you, thank you all so much! This is the first chance I’ve had to offer my thanks for the cards and letters and emails and personal phone calls I received after my surgery at the end of May. I’m deeply grateful to all of you for your concern.

No, I don’t want to single out individual people — you know who you are, and maybe this will give you some idea how much it meant to me. And it wasn’t only individuals, either. Salem Quarter meetings made announcements, included my name in newsletters and e-mail bulletins, and mailed me get-well cards to let me know of their concern. Friends, I’m so blessed to be working with folks like you!

And just to keep you all up to date: The procedure was successful in finding and removing what should probably be called a Quaker cancer — nonaggressive and noninvasive. There will be no chemotherapy or radiotherapy, just periodic checkups to make sure it doesn’t recur.

However, a complication of the procedure itself restricts my activity somewhat. There’s no way of knowing whether it’ll work itself out, or if it’ll be like this for the rest of my life. I’m cutting back on my work somewhat to accommodate it (though even on a reduced schedule, I’m still working more than the expected 35 hours a week!). The Steering Committee will be kept informed, of course, on how things are going.

In my absence, Salem Quarter approved the selection of a new clerk. Barry Sloane has been clerk of Mickleton MM for — well, for longer than I’ve been coordinator. And his wife, Dianne, has served as the quarter treasurer all that time as well.

An apology on my part: In the list of officers and committees of Salem Quarter in the Summer newsletter, incorrect e-mail addresses were given for both Dianne and Barry (at that time, as a member of the Finance Committee). The correct addresses are cbesloane @ comcast.net (Barry) and dhsloane @ comcast.net (Dianne). Please update your copies of Salem Quarter News to reflect the change.

It’s going to be a pleasure to see both Barry and Dianne more frequently, and to work with Barry in his new role. I hope Salem Quarter Friends will welcome him and support him in the sometimes difficult task of keeping us focussed, orderly, and worshipful in our business meetings.

Finally, it feels as if we’ve been playing musical Quarterly Meeting programs. Frank Lenik of Woodstown MM had been scheduled to give us a talk at June’s session. We’d expected to hear about his trip to southeast Asia to observe the detection and removal of unexploded ordnance left over from the Vietnam war. Among the devices used are the Schonstedt metal detectors that Frank spotted at a surveyors’ convention in 2007, which he and Woodstown MM have raised money to purchase and donate to the United Nations.

The date, however, conflicted with a wedding that Frank had to be part of. So we had to cancel his presentation and substitute Tom Etherington’s excellent talk on the history of translating the Bible into English. (Thanks, Tom, for thy willingness.)

And the September quarterly meeting was supposed to feature Julian Brelsford of PYM, telling us about the long-term needs of Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake. Both Julian and his sister, Christa, have volunteered for some time with an adult literacy program in the impoverished nation. In fact, they were in Haiti when the earthquake struck. Despite evacuation to the United States, Christa lost part of her leg after being caught in a crumbling building.

Julian, however, has left PYM’s employ and will be—you guessed it—back in Haiti in September. We hope to invite him another time. For now, though, we’re fortunate to be hearing Frank Lenik’s talk that we missed in June. Please join us at Greenwich MM to listen to Frank and see his photos of his trip. I’ll look forward to seeing you all there.
