FALL 201013 Sixth Month 2010
Salem Quarterly Meeting met 16/13/2010, at Mickleton Monthly Meeting. Out of worship, acting clerk Barry Sloane convened the meeting. There was a Friendly presence of twenty-six for business.
Minutes of the quarterly meeting on 3/14/2010 were approved as they appeared in Salem Quarter News.
On behalf of the Nominating Committee, Diane Metz (Seaville) reported that the committee has met twice. After much discussion they are recommending that the current positions of clerk and assistant clerk be divided into three positions: clerk, assistant clerk, and recording clerk.
They also brought forth the following names: clerk, Barry Sloane (Mickleton); recording clerk, Rebecca Shapiro (Salem); Education Fund Committee, Marsha Gaspar (Woodbury); PYM Nominating Committee, Dana Houghton (Woodstown). The position of assistant clerk is vacant at this time. Nominating Committee expects to bring a name to September quarterly meeting.
Salem Quarterly Meeting approved the Nominating Committee position recommendation and the names brought forth for those positions.
The clerk spoke regarding similarities and differences in style between himself and previous clerks. One such style similarity is in regards to a written agenda and the length of business meeting, and his belief that preparation leads to a smooth-running meeting. He thanked the quarter for their confidence in him.
Marsha Gaspar (Woodbury) announced the theme and date of Tri- Quarter GatheringMiracle Weekend, Miracle Life: The Astonishing Miracle of Being on 10/1-10/3/2010. Workshops are being developed; Friends are invited to share their ideas and willingness to lead.
Treasurer Dianne Sloane (Mickleton) presented a report on the last quarter and a report on the year to date. She was pleased to state that all meetings have made their covenants. She reviewed the expenses and receipts for the year. The Auditing Committee will be meeting along with the Treasurer and the current and previous Finance Committee clerks.
Tom Etherington (Mullica Hill) reported briefly from Steering Committee on the health of the coordinator, Phil Anthony.
Julia Zinader (Mickleton) reported from the Committee of Caring. Currently, there are only two Friends on the committee. They have continued to attend Woodbury on a monthly basis. Comments were made regarding the positive conduct and appreciation of the committee as well as comments regarding the consideration of the continuation of the committee.
The clerk asked that the Steering Committee revisit the status and purpose of the Committee of Caring as is their responsibility, and report to Salem Quarterly Meeting.
Mario Cavallini (Mickleton) reported from the Worship & Ministry Committee. They met and addressed previous and future events. Michael Gibson (Mullica Hill) spoke about his sense of the Meditation Retreat. The Worship & Ministry committee resolved to ask the quarter to authorize a gathering of Salem Quarter Friends for the purpose of forming prayer groups.
Salem Quarterly Meeting approved the scheduling of a gathering on 8/10/2010 under the support of the Salem Quarter Worship & Ministry committee to invite Salem Quarter Friends with an interest in cooperative intercessory prayer to come together and form prayer groups.
Gary Holmes (Woodstown) reported from the Salem Quarter Trustees. They met cleaned the meetinghouse in preparation for the Salem County Historical Society Open House. Gary served as host for the event, which was well received. The committee noted that the lawn service was piling tree branches in the shed, a practice that need to be discontinued.
The clerk made several announcements and invited Friends to do likewise. The Quarter offered thanks to Mickleton Monthly Meeting for their hospitality and to Tom Etherington (Mullica Hill) for the program he presented on the history of the English Bible. Meeting closed with worship after one hour of business.
