Quarterly Meeting Minutes

12 Ninth Month 2010

Salem Quarterly Meeting met 9/12/2010 at Greenwich Monthly Meeting. Out of worship, clerk Barry Sloane convened the meeting, welcomed Friends and thanked Greenwich for their hospitality. There was a Friendly presence for business of fifteen representing five of the seven Monthly Meetings in the quarter with three Friends from outside the quarter.

Minutes of the quarterly meeting on 6/13/2010 were approved as they appeared in Salem Quarter News with the addition of the word “and” after “met” on page nine, sixth paragraph, second line.

On behalf of the Nominating Committee, the clerk reported that the committee has met with Linda Jeffrey regarding the position of assistant clerk for the quarter. She is willing to serve.

SQM approved the nomination of Linda Jeffrey (Woodstown) as assistant clerk for the quarter.

Marsha Gaspar (Woodbury) announced that the information and registration packets for Tri-Quarter Gathering have been mailed.

Tom Etherington (Mullica Hill) reported from Steering Committee. There has been no response to the requests forwarded to the monthly meetings for volunteers to serve on the Committee of Caring. Tom also indicated that in light of a lack of volunteers to serve, perhaps we should reconsider how we respond to decisions made by Woodbury.

Friends commented on the possibility of laying down the committee and the use of experienced conflict resolution individuals in similar situations. It was noted that in this particular situation the time for conflict resolution has passed. One Friend reported that currently, business is being conducted in a Quakerly way. It was further noted that reports of the conduct of the care committee throughout the process were dependent on the source of information. The clerk read a passage regarding membership from Faith and Practice.

SQM referred the issues of laying down the Care Committee and how best to proceed with the remaining issues of conflict and community building related to Woodbury MM back to the Steering Committee. The quarter requested that the Steering Committee include a continuing dialogue between those on various sides of the issues in their proceedings.

Barry Sloane, clerk, presented a written report from the treasurer, Dianne Sloane, which was available for Friends’ perusal. The Auditors Committee has not yet met. The clerk of Finance Committee was asked to convene a meeting.

Mike Ayars (Woodstown) reported on the activities at Friends Village. He is available to talk with anyone at length.

Mario Cavallini (Mickleton) reported from the Worship & Ministry committee.

Gary Holmes (Woodstown) reported from the Salem Quarter Trustees via an e-mail. They have not met since our last quarterly meeting. They will be meeting soon as there is a concern regarding some overhanging branches at the Lower Alloways Creek meetinghouse.

There was no report from Friends School, as they are all busy with a back-to-school activity on campus today.

There were some concerns expressed regarding the current issue of Koran burning in Florida. Friends were asked to consider possible ways of addressing the issue. Woodstown Monthly Meeting will be hosting three adult education classes in Islam in September/October during their adult First-day School with the goals of communicating and building bridges. Steering Committee was asked to consider ways in which the quarter might address this issue. Woodstown was asked to consider ways in which they may make copies of the presentation available.

Announcements were made and the meeting was closed in worship.
