Salem Quarterly Meeting met 12/13/2009 at Salem Monthly Meeting. Out of worship, clerk Sondra Ball (Mickleton) convened the meeting. There was a Friendly presence of twenty-nine for business.
Minutes of the last quarterly meeting on 9/13/2009 were approved as they appeared in Salem Quarter News.
Friends were delighted to have welcomed the Iraqi family at our lunch break. Dr. Karim spoke briefly at that time and introduced his wife and sons. It was noted at business meeting that while Woodstown Monthly Meeting was providing financial support, additional donations were always welcomed.
On behalf of the Nominating Committee, clerk Sondra Ball (Mickleton) presented the nomination of Michael Shapiro (Salem) to fill the vacancy in the positions of Salem Quarter assistant treasurer and clerk of the Finance Committee, due to the resignation of Mike Ayars as he assumes the clerkship of Woodstown Monthly Meeting. Friends approved the following minute:
Salem Quarterly Meeting approved the nomination of Michael Shapiro (Salem) as recommended by the Nominating Committee to the position of Salem Quarter assistant treasurer and clerk of the Finance Committee.
The Finance Committee report and 2011 budget were presented by Mike Ayars (Woodstown). The finance report was accepted as presented. Mike answered questions regarding budget funding, salary freezes, and Philadelphia Yearly Meeting coordinator program underwriting. Friends approved the following minute:
Salem Quarterly Meeting approved the 2011 budget as presented, with Wendy Mitsui (Greenwich) standing aside due to her belief that the coordinator program in its current form should be revised.
Bill Carrigan (Mickleton) presented a request for a minute of appreciation for the teachers at Friends School at Mullica Hill and for tuition assistance for Almugerah Obaidi. The tuition request was made to cover part of the overage of financial aid costs made on his behalf. Language barriers present a special-needs situation which places extra demand on the teaching staff as well as some extra costs. Bonnie Clark, director of admissions at FSMH, was on hand to answer questions. Friends approved the following minutes:
Salem Quarterly Meeting approved donating $500 in tuition assistance to FSHM for Almugerah Obaidi. The clerk will send a minute of appreciation to the staff and committees of FSMH for their efforts on his behalf.
Salem Quarterly Meeting encouraged funds be made available on a one-time basis through the quarter Education Fund when funding is next considered in the spring, contingent upon endorsement by Woodstown Monthly Meeting.
Richard Joseph made a presentation regarding a request for the formation of a Salem Quarter committee. This committee would be modeled on the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Indian Committee, but specifically focused on a single tribe, the Lenni Lenape. They would act as a trustee for a collection of artifacts (currently housed at the Cultural Center on Commerce St. in Bridgeton), maintain a library of information, and act as a liaison between the tribe and the quarter. This request has arisen from an increased level of activity between the tribe and the quarter. Friends approved the following minute:
Salem Quarterly Meeting approved a small group of individuals to meet as a clearness committee for the formation of a Salem Quarter Indian Committee, to bring details and goals to the 1/22 Salem Quarter News deadline for consideration at the March quarterly meeting. The clerk has been released to appoint this committee.
Mike Ayars (Woodstown) presented a written report from Friends Village to be published in Salem Quarter News.
As committee clerk, Tom Etherington (Mullica Hill) presented a report from the Steering Committee. The report was accepted as presented.
On behalf of the Committee of Caring, Mario Cavallini (Mickleton) offered that progress was a slow sculpture. On the surface there have been no changes, but on a deeper level community continues to rebuild. Concerns that all visitors seem to share the same home meeting were expressed. It was noted that all are individuals with unique perceptions and do not express a corporate viewpoint. A request was made that concern and love for the meeting not be made in front of guests. Friends did not make any changes to the manner in which the committee operates.
A report was offered by Mario Cavallini (Mickleton) from the Worship & Ministry Committee. It highlighted the last meeting and was accepted as presented.
The Trustees reported on the LAC property. The ivy was successfully removed. There is need to check into continuing lawn care. A termite inspector has been found to make an inspection. There is 30 per cent more property at the Port Elizabeth cemetery than originally thought. The report was accepted as presented.
The coordinator made announcements regarding upcoming events, including a quarter meditation retreat in April. Meeting was closed with worship.
