At a Regional Staff gathering this spring, I listened to my co-workers from other quarters speak of how difficult it was to find people to run—or even participate in—their programs. When it was my turn, I’ll admit, I took quite a bit of pride in telling them how active Salem Quarter has been. Maybe this is a good time to tell you: I’m darned proud to be working with a group like you!

Not that we don’t have our problems of overwork and overscheduling. I noticed that fewer Salem Quarter members than ever before showed up for the most satisfying, spiritually deep PYM Annual Sessions I’ve ever experienced. Only 16 of us signed the Quarter book, and there were two others I saw who came for one evening session. This is a problem throughout PYM, of course; but for our own sakes, I hope we can examine our lives and find less harried, more rewarding uses of our time.

Not that the monthly meetings have been idle. From Woodbury’s interfaith Earth Day celebration to Mickleton’s hosting the Friends General Conference Executive Committee—with help from Woodbury, and pot pie dinners donated by Salem; from Mullica Hill’s annual meeting retreat to Woodstown’s evening to examine how we might use Rachel Davis DuBois’ Conversation Groups; from Salem’s Pot Pie Dinner to the Greenwich art show; and to Seaville’s monthly meeting garage sale, there’s been a lot of activity of all sorts in Salem Quarter.

We’re gearing up for a full summer and fall, too. The Quarter’s first Coordinator, Michael Wajda, and his wife, Alison Levie, will facilitate our Quarter Retreat—“Speak to Us of Leaven”—at the Burlington Meeting House Friday to Sunday, 23–25 August. See the article for details and registration form. We’re also fortunate enough to have Arthur Larrabee, former clerk of PYM, leading a day-long workshop on Quaker business at Mickleton on Saturday, 21 September. Details of the workshop, first proposed by the Quarter Nominating Committee, are in another article. Tri-Quarterly Gathering is a little later this year than last. You’ll find an article about that in this issue of Salem Quarter News. Please consider all three of these rewarding events, supported by Salem Quarter, in your plans.

And Quarterly Meeting will be at Seaville MM on Sunday, 9 June—schedule is at right. We’re glad to welcome Friends Melissa Whaley and Sam Chamberlain with their experiential, from-the-heart program of sharing in words and dance on the effects of the War on Drugs. Lunch, provided by the meeting, promises to be just as wonderful: Confidentally, the best fish chowder I ever tasted was made by a friend from Seaville ...

A final word: The June Quarterly Meeting will be the first to be clerked by Michael Gibson, a dear Friend from Woodbury MM. Michael’s articles and poetry have graced these pages, and he comes to the Quarter after being clerk of his own meeting. Please join me in Seaville to welcome and support him in his new role.
