WINTER 200814 Ninth Month 2008
Salem Quarterly Meeting met 14 Ninth Month 2008, at the lower meetinghouse in Greenwich. Out of worship, acting clerk Barry Sloane (Mickleton) convened the meeting. There was a Friendly presence of sixteen for business.
Minutes of the last quarterly meeting on 8 Sixth Month 2008 were approved as they appeared in Salem Quarter News.
Coordinator Phil Anthony reported on the Millville Worship Group. They are meeting on a monthly basis on the second Sunday of the month. There is a core group of four to five committed participants. They are following the plan that Richard Rieger and Mary Waddington (Salem) envisioned, about thirty minutes each of adult education and open worship, followed by worship sharing. Additional facilitators are needed for Firstday School lessons and to conduct worship. The group has requested a gifts program from the Quarter Gifts Working Group.
The Finance Committee has not yet met. Their report on possible adjustments to the method of financing the Quarter was deferred.
The Steering Committee presented a revised and simplified Child Safety Policy for discussion and consideration. Based on the discussion, Friends approved the following minutes:
Salem Quarterly Meeting approved the Child Safety Policy as submitted in writing by the Salem Quarter Steering Committee.
Salem Quarterly Meeting approved the laying down of the previously appointed Child Safety Committee.
After a discussion of the changing needs of the Quarter and the availability of adult volunteers, Friends approved the following minute:
Salem Quarterly Meeting approved the laying down of the Friends ~ Young and Young at Heart Committee due to the lack of available adult Friendly Presences. The Quarter added their sincerest thanks to Patti Burns for all her efforts with the committee and their hope that we will be able to revive the committee in the future.
A request was presented from Mary Mills (Woodbury) for the Quarter to assume care of the Woodbury Friends Meeting Peace and Social Concerns Beatrice H. Vandegrift Environment Essay Contest. Mary set up the fund in memory of her mother and intends to increase the award and establish the account as a scholarship fund for a graduating Woodbury High School senior intending to major in environmental science. She would like to place the fund under the care of the Quarter and change the name to the Salem Quarter Beatrice H. Vandegrift Environmental Scholarship. After some discussion and questions that could not be answered due to Marys absence, Friends approved the following minute:
Salem Quarterly Meeting empowered the Salem Quarter Steering Committee to discuss the request by Mary Mills to partner with Salem Quarterly Meeting regarding the Beatrice H. Vandegrift Environmental Scholarship.
Mario Cavallini (Mickleton) presented a report from the Care Committee. Friends shared assorted comments on the progress, status, and goals. The Care Committee remains committed.
Julia Zinader (Mickleton) presented the report from the Salem Quarter Steering Committee on behalf of committee clerk Tom Etherington.
A report from the Worship & Ministry Committee was presented by clerk Mario Cavallini (Mickleton). He shared the thought that the experience was deeply felt by all, although it was hard to specify the theme of the discussion. Phil added that the discussion arose from the nurtured spiritual development of those who were in attendance. The Quarter Worship & Ministry committee meetings are open to all and Friends are encouraged to attend.
The Trustees have not met during the last quarter. They have replaced two panes of glass at the Lower Alloways Creek property, and clerk Gary Holmes (Woodstown) expects them to meet soon.
Bill Carrigan (Mickleton) presented a report from Friends School Mullica Hill.
Grace Thompson (Greenwich) shared a report on Friends Village. They are a growing, thriving community. Higher staff morale is the result of focus groups working with their concerns. The Village is in the process of considering the construction of additional apartments. As the result of a fundraiser, they have just purchased a new piano and are holding monthly recitals. The Golf Outing and Silent Auction are on the horizon, as is a Bazaar in November.
The clear and concise Finance Committee report was accepted without any questions as presented by treasurer Dianne Sloane (Mickleton).
A report from Karen Paarz on her project on Northern Ireland will be include in the Salem Quarter News, and a copy of the book written about the project, Breaching Derrys Walls, is a gift to the Quarter
The clerk made announcements regarding a variety of yearly, quarterly, and monthly meeting events. Friends noted the efficiency of the meeting and thanked the acting clerk. Meeting was closed with worship.
